The Grist Mill
The Benjamin Hammond Mill at the Gilbert Stuart Museum is said to have ground the finest, sweetest, corn in the community. The old mill stones at the entrance and the huge granite stone at the right of the mill are original. Near the peak of the roof , there still stands the same bell the farmers rang to call the miller when he was in the field working. The unusual latch on the door, with its wooden spring, is a reminder of the ingenuity of our colonial forefathers. The mill was built in 1662 and is a National Historic Landmark.
